By installing or using the Arcaneum Focus browser extension, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please uninstall the extension and discontinue use.

These terms apply to the Arcaneum Focus browser extension, in every browser and extension store through which it is distributed, and to any associated websites operated by The Arcaneum, including focus.thearcaneum.org.

Arcaneum Focus is a free browser extension that provides a focused reading environment for web articles and PDF documents. Features include reader mode, text highlighting, floating notes, an idea connection board, a reading queue, a focus timer, and citation generation.

The extension is free of charge for private, non-commercial use, including study, teaching, and research. No account is required to use it.

The Arcaneum grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Arcaneum Focus solely for your own private, non-commercial reading and research purposes.

This licence does not permit you to:

— Copy, modify, distribute, sell, or sublicense the extension or any part of it— Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the extension's code— Use the extension or its components to build a competing product or service— Remove or alter any proprietary notices or branding within the extension

Commercial and institutional use

Arcaneum Focus is free for students, educators, and researchers using it for their own study, teaching, or research, and we intend that to remain so. A commercial or institutional licence is required for (a) use in connection with a for-profit business or any revenue-generating purpose, and (b) any deployment provided or managed by an organisation for its members or staff, for example through a managed browser policy. Being a student, educator, or researcher does not by itself authorise either. Individuals at a university or school who install Arcaneum Focus themselves for their own study, teaching, or research are covered by the free licence. To obtain a commercial or institutional licence, write to licensing@thearcaneum.org. Licensed and unlicensed users receive the same software and the same privacy protections.

Arcaneum Focus, including its name, logo, design, interface, and underlying code, is the intellectual property of The Arcaneum. All rights not expressly granted in these terms are reserved.

The Arcaneum Focus extension incorporates the following open-source libraries under their respective licences: Mozilla Readability (Apache 2.0) and PDF.js (Apache 2.0). Your use of those components is also governed by those licences.

Content you read, annotate, or save using the extension remains entirely your own. The Arcaneum makes no claim to any content you access or annotate while using the extension.

You agree to use Arcaneum Focus only for lawful purposes and in a manner consistent with all applicable laws and regulations. You agree not to:

— Use the extension to access, annotate, or distribute content that infringes the intellectual property rights of others— Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or compromise the integrity or security of the extension— Use the extension in any way that could damage, disable, or impair it or any related services— Misrepresent your identity or affiliation in connection with the extension

All data created through your use of the extension — including highlights, notes, sticky notes, reading positions, and preferences — is stored exclusively on your own device. The Arcaneum has no access to this data.

You are solely responsible for managing and backing up any data stored by the extension. The Arcaneum accepts no liability for data loss resulting from browser updates, device failure, extension removal, or any other cause.

Arcaneum Focus is provided on an "as available" basis. The Arcaneum reserves the right to update, modify, suspend, or discontinue the extension at any time, with or without notice.

Updates are distributed through the extension store from which you installed Arcaneum Focus (such as the Chrome Web Store or the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store) and may be installed automatically by your browser. By using the extension, you consent to receiving such updates. The Arcaneum will endeavour to ensure that updates do not degrade existing functionality, but cannot guarantee this in all circumstances.

Arcaneum Focus is designed to work with web content and PDF documents that you choose to open. The Arcaneum is not responsible for the accuracy, legality, or appropriateness of any third-party content you access using the extension.

The extension may interact with web pages that contain their own terms of service. Your use of those pages remains subject to the terms of their respective publishers.

Arcaneum Focus is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

The Arcaneum does not warrant that the extension will be error-free, uninterrupted, or compatible with all websites or browser versions. Reading interfaces and annotation tools may not function correctly on all web pages, particularly those with unusual or highly dynamic layouts.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, The Arcaneum shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the extension, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of annotations, or interruption of reading workflows.

The Arcaneum's total liability to you for any claim arising from these terms or your use of the extension shall not exceed the total fees, if any, that you paid to The Arcaneum for a commercial or institutional licence for the extension in the twelve months before the claim arose. If you have paid no such fees, this amount is zero. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

The Arcaneum may update these Terms of Service from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's release notes.

Your continued use of the extension after any changes to these terms constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you do not agree to the updated terms, you should uninstall the extension.

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the extension shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation in the first instance. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you may have under applicable consumer protection laws.
